"It's light, comfortable, not too tight, and you don' sweat in it from the heat. You can go right through a fire in this thing, and no gas will penetrate it. It's even bulletproof, they say. Of course, fire, toxic gas, and bullets-these are only Earth perils. The zone doesn't have those; in the Zone you have other worries. Anyhow, truth be told, even in their spec-suits people drop like flies. On the other hand, without them it'd probably be even worse. These suits are completely safe from the burning fuzz, for example. And from Satan's blossom and its spit ... All right."  Roadside Picnic - Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, 1972
During the residency, we built a screen-printing studio and sewing workshop where we print sewing patterns onto fabric and process them into protective clothing - celebrating DIY-culture. In our collaborative work, we explore work processes and the concept of functionality. The design addresses one of the fundamental functions of clothing: protecting the body. However, 'protective clothing' goes beyond the purely practical aspects of knee pads for a road worker or a firefighter's fireproof suit. Danger can come from many different directions these days. The costume we designed is therefore adaptable to an individual's sense of danger or threat. What do you want to protect or protect yourself against?
For the production of the costumes, we also invited fellow artists Marcel van den Berg, Nishiko, Oscar Peters, Vincka Struben, and Joubin Zargarbashi to create their own costumes based on our basic pattern.
